Updates to Personal Tax Deadlines

Dear Clients

We are closely monitoring the evolving situation regarding the coronavirus (COVID-19).

Last week the Federal Government announced the following measures in regards to the tax deadlines for Canadians:

  • The tax filing deadlines have been extended:
    • Personal: extended to June 1, 2020 (previously April 30th)
    • Trusts: extended to May 1, 2020 (previously March 30th)
    • Corporate: No changes announced
  • Tax payments and instalments have been extended:
    • Personal: extended to September 1, 2020
    • Corporate: extended to September 1, 2020 for any balances that become owing or due after March 18, 2020. This means you will not be assessed any penalties or interest if your balance due is paid by September 1, 2020.
    • Please note: Any balances which are currently due or were due on or before March 18, 2020 are still due and payable and could accrue interest.

As a personal tax client, our preference is still to file your return as early as possible so that you can take advantage of some of the benefits that the federal government is implementing during this time. We encourage you to get your information in to us now and choose to interact with our team using our online tools.

In order for us to be effective and have the best chance of still filing your tax return on a timely basis, we are asking the following of you:

  1. Get your info in early! Spend your time in social distance by gathering and summarizing your tax information.
  2. Fill out our 2019 – Client letter with Appendix2019 – Engagement and Representation Letter2019 – Personal Income Tax (PIT) Checklist
  3. Scan your info to PDF, or take pictures with your phone, and then:
    • Upload to ShareFile, our secure portal.
    • Email it to us if you have to – but make sure your files are password-protected
  4. Provide us with your phone number, or an alternate best way to get a hold of you.
  5. Then focus on your family. We will reach out to you when your tax return is complete and review everything with you before we file.

Thank you for your understanding. If you have any questions or concerns, please reach out to us directly.
