Senior Tax Manager

The Opportunity: 

Horizon CPA is a mid-size professional accounting firm located in downtown Vancouver. We provide hands-on accounting, tax compliance, advisory and financial planning services to entrepreneurs, professional corporations and other privately-owned entities.

We are looking for a Senior Tax Manager to lead our team and support Principals and clients by working directly with them to provide taxation and advisory services. The tax work at Horizon will be focused on private companies and entrepreneurs in Canada and span across the spectrum from corporate reorganizations, standard tax compliance, CRA audit support and indirect taxes, such as GST and/or PST.  The Senior Tax Manager will be responsible for undertaking and managing an assigned segment of the Firm’s tax work, allocating work amongst the team efficiently, and reviewing work prepared by team members. Horizon Managers promote a culture of development and training at the firm by leading and mentoring team members toward meeting and managing client and firm expectations.  

Required Qualifications:  

  • Qualified CPA with at least 3 years’ managerial experience in a public practice firm working with private enterprise clients 
  • Completed In-depth Tax I, II, III or in the process of doing so currently 
  • Extensive experience with Canadian tax preparation of personal and corporate tax returns and various other required filings (e.g. trust returns, tax elections, etc.)  

Work Performed 

  • Manage and coordinate short, medium and long-term tax planning, corporate reorganizations, and other compliance services for corporations, partnerships, trusts and individuals 
  • Identify opportunities to provide tax planning and other special services 
  • Review corporate, individual and trust returns
  • Write or review tax memos and tax planning letters, including restructuring and reorganization planning 
  • Conduct research on technical tax topics  
  • Draft tax blogs for the firm’s website/distribution list by email 
  • Remain up to date on new tax legislation and case law, and prepare/conduct internal training with team members 
  • Provide mentoring and technical guidance to the team 
  • Monitor progress of work being completed on files and communicate with the team. 
  • Work and communicate with management, lawyers, and other advisors in service of the client 
  • Direct, supervise, and oversee the work client work prepared by team members 

Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities: 

  • Strong project management skills with a demonstrated ability to manage time and adhere to strict deadlines and budget
  • Strong technical tax knowledge and application thereof
  • Demonstrated ability to work on multiple engagements concurrently
  • Ability to adapt methodologies and techniques to unique circumstances
  • Proven leadership, organizational, analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent client service skills with the ability to understand the client’s business
  • Ability to develop a positive rapport and convey concepts and services with clients
  • Commitment to professional and client service excellence
  • Excellent English communication skills, both written and verbal 
  • Champions efficient and effective use of technology, programs, software to complete work 

The expected base salary range for this position is $130,000 to $180,000 and may be eligible for performance-based bonuses. The determination of an applicant’s base salary within this range is based on the individual’s location, skills, competencies, and unique qualifications.
